Thesis title: ‘How do Students, Lecturers and Managers in Higher Education understand ‘Student Engagement’ and factors impacting Undergraduate Students’ Motivation and Autonomy?’
Doctoral research explored the undergraduate students’ experience and unveiled factors impacting levels of engagement, motivation and autonomy. The ‘Student Engagement’ phenomenon, together with the sector’s existing accountability-driven, neoliberal framework, are contextually and critically explored as part of this Case Study research. Research outcomes arose via the qualitative analysis of students’ stories relaying immersive learning experiences and the experiences shared by managers, lecturers and students during semi-structured interviews when considering the student experience. Outcomes included the development of tools and initiatives to support staff in their engagement of scholarly practice and accepting ‘Student Autonomy’ as the next principal construct to drive the sector forward.
